Sussex College Basketball Finals
Angmering 93 Sussex Downs Eastbourne 85

A superb final was played out in front of 100 supporters to decide the Sussex College League Championships at Angmering on Wednesday, 2nd April.

Angmering, unbeaten in the league this season defeated Brighton and Hove 6th Form College to reach the final whilst Eastbourne had a comfortable 20 point victory over Worthing 6th Form, and with just two points separating the team in their league encounter this promised to be an exciting game.

Early exchanges saw point guard Simon Yates (Angmering) and Ross Pudsey (Eastbourne) exchange a series of 3 pointers giving Angmering a slight edge, 25-22 at the end of the quarter. Yates continued to dominate in the second quarter scoring 22 of the teams 56 points to give Angmering a 56-54 lead at half term. Excellent play from Michael Taylor, Dan Buttifant and Richard Lander at guard and the inside presence of Dan Dunscombe, David Taylor and Rhys Francis helped maintain a slight advantage for Angmering but with Eastbourne’s Ross Pudsey and Shaun Charman combining to hit eight 3 pointers the game stayed tight until the final minutes . Dan Dunscombe scored 8 points including a defining slam dunk at the end to give Angmering the title 93 – 85.

Year 9 district Rugby Champions
Angmering 8 Steyning 7

With both schools having won all their District League fixtures, the final match would decide this year’s championship.

Angmering playing into the wind in the first half looked the stronger team, pressing the Steyning line on numerous occasions. Excellent defence prevented any score, until a driving run from don Herron and quick paring from scrum half Harry Metters and fly half Barty Pegg gave the lightning quick Adam Fastnedge room to sprint into the corner, touching down as he received a heavy tackle.

Steyning responded quickly in the second half, exploiting Angmering’s lack of tackle power with Fastnedge out of the game with a badly bruised arm, to score and convert from a well worked move to lead 7-5.

Committed play from Sam Gilbert, Ed Cosgrove and tom Clifford kept driving Angmering forward with Barty Pegg using the wind to keep Steyning pegged back into their own half. Pressure paid off with a penalty award which Barty Pegg calmly kicked to give Angmering a one point lead with 10 minutes left.

Heroic tackling from Will Dennis, Spencer Babb, Gregg Trencher and Ben Forbes kept Steyning at bay to secure a hard fought league championship.

Under 14 Rugby to strong for Littlehampton
Angmering 50 Littlehampton 0
Angmering rugby players were just too strong for local rivals Littlehampton. Playing a very high tempo game in the forwards Sam Gilbert and Ed Cosgrove had superb games, picking and driving from rucks and mauls. In the backs Barty Pegg and Adam Fastnedge exploited the gaps in Littlehamptons defence. Tom Clifford, Ben Forbes and Dom Herron were all dominant in the tight. Next week should be much tougher with crucial games against rivals St Andrews and Durrington.
